Responsive Web Design in Kitchener

Kitchener, Waterloo - Stop thinking in terms of fixed pixel widths and use HTML5 and CSS3 to develop Websites that will dynamically adapt to different screen sizes on all devices

I recently finished reading the book titled “Responsive Web Design,” by Ethan Marcotte, which I highly recommend. This is a great book that explains how to utilize three innovative techniques and technologies in Web Design and Development to create Websites that are sensitive to the device they are displayed on.

What is Responsive Web Design

Marcotte advocates to the use of fluid grids, images and flexible queries to build one single site that automatically fits into the display being used as opposed to developing several parallel Web Design “themes”, for desktop and for mobile browsers.

In his book, Ethan Marcotte specifically talks against redirecting traffic from mobile devices to other domains or directories, but rather using and integrating a set of Web Design practices that are based more on flexibility and fluidity, mainly by taking full advantage of HTML5 and CSS3.

Furthermore, Marcotte also talks about a key variable to consider in Web Design: Variable Context. Depending on the types of applications being used, it may be desirable to develop a Website, whose mobile counterpart integrates with functionality already existent within the mobile, such as meeting schedules, Google Maps, Email, etc.

In any case, Responsive Web Design is a book that web designers should read especially now that summer is just around the corner. There's no excuse not to do so!
